Hi, I'm the QuickBooks Gal. Today's Quicklet is a reminder to those of you who process your own payroll that on July 22, 2007 the new Federal Minimum Wage Law took effect.
There are several guidelines that we employers should be aware of now in order to assure proper compliance. In addition, many state or local statutes may have been revised, so you might want to check with your state's labor commission regarding the new Federal guidelines and any additional state regulation that may apply.
Here in Nevada, state minimum wage regulations are impacted by a law that became effective on July 1, 2007. If you do not use a payroll company such as ADP, Odyssey Business Services, or Payroll Systems of Nevada, you should make sure that you understand the new statutes with particular regard to how hourly overtime is calculated in order to assure that you are in compliance.
I've put a link on my blog for Nevada employers who want more information on the new state regulations. In Nevada, follow this link to the Nevada Office of The Labor Comissioner for more information about how these new laws will affect your employees and how you must comply.
That's it for now...I hope you find this information helpful. Join me next time for another in our series of Quicklets, informational podcasts about QuickBooks and bookkeeping related topics. If you have questions or suggestions, please email me at jayne@quickbooksgal.com.
I'm Jayne Miller, The QuickBooks Gal. Thanks for listening.
Hi, I’m Jayne Miller, the QuickBooks Gal. Welcome to another in our series of “Quicklets” –informational podcasts about QuickBooks and related bookkeeping topics.
Today’s topic is working with WIP accounts in QuickBooks®, something many of us use and don’t always fully understand. Builders and contractors who purchase land and then develop it have to comply with accounting requirements for revenue and expense recognition that are a little different and require a some modification of the standard QuickBooks set up. I have found that many engineering firms, attorneys and other similar organizations like to use the WIP as well.
I don’t think I could do a better job of explaining the process than this workbook does, so I will attach a link to it on my blog. If you have questions about using WIP accounts, I think you will find this very useful. Don’t forget that you can also find good information and get online support directly from Intuit at www.quickbooks.com/support.
Don’t forget to visit our website, www.quickbooksgal.com to learn more about me, the services we offer and our workshops. Remember, if you wish to read or listen to past podcasts, they are available online at blog.quickbooksgal.com.

I’m returning to our regular schedule of bi-monthly podcasts beginning this week. As I told you in my last podcast, the QuickBooksGal has been involved in exciting training, growth, office expansion and remodels. We still have one more door that needs to be installed to allow passage between our main office and the classroom, and then we can get back to normal.

Peachtree News
I received my copy of Peachtree 2008 last week. I really like this new program. They still haven’t done anything about the 2 open year’s limitation, but they are moving in the right direction with their new user interface and other improvements. I will do a podcast in August about what’s new in Peachtree 2008. I have been using Peachtree since 1987 and while I am a huge fan of QuickBooks, I still like Peachtree, especially for certain industries.
QuickBooks Gal News
There are great things going on here in Reno for the QuickBooksGal. Recently my office manager and I were shopping for office supplies and had the pleasure of being the very first customers to shop at the new Office Depot in Spanish Springs, Nevada. That was fun…neither of us had ever been the first customers before.
We have two summer promotions going on right now. To learn more about the first one, visit our website at www.quickbooksgal.com for more information about our Dollar - A- Minute special. You can use this gift certificate to purchase training, consulting, project services, or classes and your first $50 will only cost you $25.00. This promotion runs through July…check it out!
As many of you know our primary office is in Reno. Effective this summer, we will be serving the Lake Tahoe area as well. We’re based in Incline Village which is located at the north end of Lake Tahoe and is a beautiful community. We look forward to meeting lots of QuickBooks users and business owners who are interested in training or services. If you live in that area and need QuickBooks support, and don’t forget to take advantage of our Just Pay Half promotion. If you’ve got a QuickBooks Mess, call the QuickBooks Gal!
Speaking of Lake Tahoe, our hearts go out to all the folks in South Lake Tahoe in the aftermath of the Angora Fire. So many of our friends and clients who live there lost everything; some who lost all have sent pictures to me. They truly lost everything. Some folks were 30-year residents. We are all saddened by their losses and join in the efforts to help out with donations. If you wish to make a donation of non-cash goods, I noticed last week that RC Willey Furniture in Reno has a drop box at their Steamboat Parkway store. I don’t know of other locations, but I am sure there are many and of course, you can always donate to the American Red Cross. We wish all the victims of this tragedy only the best.
We’re back on track now, so look for more podcasts soon. Next time: Using WIP Accounts in QuickBooks.
Coming soon: Sharing QuickBooks Data between MAC and PC What’s New in Peachtree 2008
